Make it easy...

For those of you who want to eating more healthy fresh non-processed foods but find it to be a challenge or find every excuse in the book on why you can't....here's the deal..

Always have a well stocked fridge!

You have to wash everything as soon as you get home from the market and have it ready to grab and go in the fridge.
I always wash all my kale, de-stem it and tear into pieces then put in a baggy so when I am ready to make a salad or something it's ready to go. Broccoli and cauliflower gets washed and cut into pieces and bagged. Cucumbers get washed, ect...ect...
Makes it A LOT EASIER and do-able!

Washed and ready to be bagged in put in fridge!

Also having things like my hummus recipe in the fridge is a good idea. Apples, pears, nuts and seeds on hand...you get the idea!

Trust me..I don't feel like coming home from the store and washing veggies and stuff but I know it must be done!! Otherwise eating healthy is gonna be a lot more difficult. After doing it a few times it will become routine and won't suck as bad.....promise!

A few other items I think you should have stocked at all times are:
Cold-pressed olive oil
Flax seed oil
Braggs Liquid Aminos
Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
Celtic sea salt

Peace and Love,

Quinoa Avocado Corn Salad

Oh my goodness deliciousness .. thanks again to Kimberly Snyder's The Beauty Detox book for this YUUUUUUMMY recipe!

I ended up with some corn in my Annie's Organic box this week which I normally wouldn't buy so I decided to give this recipe a try and so glad I did.

Quinoa, Avocado and Corn Salad

Base Ingredients:
3 cups of water
1 1/2 cups of dry quinoa (be sure to soak overnight and rinse well before using)
Raw kernels of 2 ears of organic corn (preferably white, shaved right from the cob)
2 avocados, sliced and cut into 1 inch pieces
3 Tablespoons of red onion, chopped fine

Dressing Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 Tablespoon olive oil
2 Tablespoon Braggs Liquid Aminos
1 Tablespoon brown rice vinegar

In saucepan bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat, add the quinoa and simmer until the water is absorbed and the grains become translucent and soft (about 10-15 min). Pour the quinoa thru a strainer and set aside in a bowl to cool.

*NOTE: To make life easier without having to soak quinoa overnight, strain it ect... buy the Sprouted Quinoa by TruRoots and just follow the directions on the back, let cool and set aside while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Blend all the dressing ingredients together in a bowl, whisk well with a fork.

*NOTE: I didn't have any brown rice vinegar so I just left it out. So my dressing ingredients were only the lemon, olive oil and Braggs Liquid Aminos

Add the kernels of corn to the quinoa (not hot quinoa, make sure it has cooled), along with the avocado and chopped onion. Mix. Pour dressing on top and mix again.

Perfect summer salad....best also eaten on top of a bed of baby spinach!

An old-fashioned hot water bottle

Gonna be quick cause I got a date with an old fashioned water bottle...uh how I love this thing ; )

Heres why....
(the below information is out of one of my school books - Integrative Nutrition by Joshua Rosenthal)

The lower belly is the home of your Hara, the central balance point of your body and according to Asian philosophy, is the center of your life energy. The Hara is the gate, the doorway to the universe energy surrounding us. Heat from a water bottle brings more energy and more blood circulation to the digestive organs in this area, which are really the engine of your body. It aids in digesting food and in unblocking energy that may be stuck after a heavy meal.

At bedtime, place an old-fashioned hot water bottle on your belly for about 15 to 20 minutes. Most hot water bottle today are plastic, so you’ll want to put the bottle in a pillowcase or get a cover for it before placing it against your skin.

On a psychological and emotional level, warmth on the belly may promote absorption and digestion of whatever feelings or mental input are left over from the day’s events. It’s an ancient and natural feeling for both men and women to seek some kind of warm coziness at night, and if there isn’t someone in the bed with you then a hot water bottle can help create this feeling. This is also an easy and inexpensive way to heat up your bed before sleeping. It’s a simple and effective way to feel nourished.

Women can also use a hot water bottle, similar to a heating pad, to help relieve the pain and tension associated with menstrual cramps. It conforms to your body and you can you can use it at night and not worry about falling asleep with it. British scientists have proven that applying heat to your abdominal region actually deactivates pain at a molecular level, similar to the effect of taking over-the-counter painkillers. The heat from the bottle blocks pain messages to the brain.

I bought mine from Amazon, Fashy is the brand. They come in all colors. They have tons of cute covers for them too, check Amazon OR 'My Store', I added them under the 'I have I love I use' tab.

When the old hubs first saw it he was like "WTF you doing with that douche bag?" I said "I don't know what I'm doing with you!" hahahah just kidding! (if you even got it LOL) point is I had no idea but I guess these hot water bottles can also be used as a douche bag or an enema bag so by all means.... have at it, it's multi-purpose!
My purpose is for  what I stated above, warmin da belly, but if I ever use it for another reason I will be sure to fill you in ; )~

Sweet Dreams,

Another kale salad recipe = YUM!

Yet another YUMO to my TUMO kale salad recipe I thought I would share.
This one is made with Lacinato kale not the curly.

Lacinato kale aka Dino kale

Kale & Avocado Salad:

1 bunch of Lacinato kale, stems removed
3 Tablespoons olive oil
2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon Celtic sea salt
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 Tablespoons red onion, diced
2 Tablespoons hemp seeds
1 avocado, cubed
1/2 cup cucumber, diced

Stack the kale, a few leaves at a time and cut into very thin ribbons. OR like I did, just rip into bite size pieces.
Place in a large bowl and sprinkle with the 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic sea salt. Using your hands, massage the salt into the kale, squeezing and tossing until the kale begins to wilt.
Add the olive oil, lemon, garlic, and onion to the bowl and continue to massage with your hands as the kale will soften some more and shrink down in size.
Lastly add the hemp seeds, avocado and cucumber and toss gently.

Enjoy!

Mmmmmmm : )~

H20

So the other day on my FB page I asked what kind of water do you drink? I was curious what everyone else does..here's why.........

Lately, I have had to go to the store more frequently to buy my bottled water and the shit ain't cheap. I feel like I'm there once a week and get a case of 24 16oz bottles and a case of 12 1liter bottles, totals $50! Everytime I go I think geese this is nuts to be spending this on water and not to mention a pain having to go stock up every week.
During my last colonics, my colon hydrotherapist asked if I was drinking good water. I said "yea I think so, I drink Penta (Ultra-Purified Water)!" She said "well that doesn't necessarily mean anything, after all it's in a plastic bottle".
Good point I thought, ok so what to do then. She recommended a water ozonator. There are quite a few on the market but she said no need to spend a crazy amount of money and that Nature Klean makes a great one for about $275. Alot of these systems can cost up to a couple of thousands of dollars.

Of course I came home and told my husband we needed one ASAP! The money we spend every month on bottle water will pay for this thing in no time. I won't have to go to the store every week and stock up AND most importantly less waste, yes I recycle them but it still saddens me to see my recycling bin fill up so quickly with just empty water bottles alone...shameful actually.
I started to do some research on the water ozonators and it got me thinking, what is everyone drinking? I feel like I'm the only one at the store with my cart filled with bottle water WTF! Are they drinking tap water they filter thru a Brita filter pitcher thing? Do they all have water coolers and just get the 5 gallon jugs delivered? Surely they don't drink tap water?!

Well duh! A lot of you responded with... the water from their refrigerator filter.
See in my new house we don't have one, I have this huge commercial type fridge so it doesn't have one so I forgot fridges have those DURH! My old house had one but I would NEVER drink out of it because I didn't trust the pipes/tubes it came out of, yea I know it's filtered but the fridge was there when I moved in so in return I didn't trust it LOL.
Stupid now that I think about it! Whatever call me a pre-madonna, I'm picky!
As for a 5 gallon water cooler, yes I do have one. It's an old one and is the water my dogs drink, even they don't get tap water LOL OMG I'm nuts!
I don't really trust that thing either though, plus it's Zephryhills and I HATE Zephryhills water. Their bottled water is the yuckiest, you can literally taste the plastic from the bottle. All of them suck really, I use to drink only Figi and even Figi started to taste plasticy. Evian and Volvic are better. Too bad Penta doesn't make 5 gallon jugs!!

Ok now that I sound like a total bitch HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm taking action...no more of this plastic bottled water, it's nuts! I will get a Brita pitcher and fill it with tap water until I figure something else out. Not to mention the money I will be saving! And the planet!

Everything happens for a reason...in the midst of my research I came across this.......WATCH!

Also check out this site for more info on what to do, testing your tap water, ect.....

Here is the link to the Nature Klean water ozonator if anyone is interested http://www.oxygenamerica.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=477
I will most likely be getting one of these and if and when I do I will be sure to tell you all about it.

Naturally Beautiful...

In all the books I have read over the last couples of years, whether about physcology, beauty, health, diet, they all agree on the same thing...

To insure a lifetime of healthy, vibrant good looks and an energetic body, a real natural beauty, there are 7 key things you must observe and maintain in your lifestyle.

  • Daily cleansing
  • Maximal nutritional intake
  • Regular consumption of water
  • Regular elimination of internal AND external toxic buildup
  • Daily movement
  • Moderate exposure to sunlight
  • Sound sleep

1.Daily Cleansing: (obviously!)
Because your skin in constantly excreting wastes and shed-ding dead
skin debris, daily cleansing is a must. ALWAYS wash your face and body before bed!

2.Maximal nutritional intake: (YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT)
As Americans we are often overfed and undernourished. Eating a diet high in white processed flour, fatty meat and cheese, excess sodium, trans-fatty acids, preservatives, white sugar, minimal fiber, and artificial  coloring you will continue to suffer from lack of energy and vitality and have a variety of aches, pains, and illnesses. It directly affects how we look...lifeless hair, brittle nails, dull skin, ect...
*remember if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got!

THE QUICKEST AND LEAST EXPENSIVE WAY TO CHANGE YOUR LOOKS AND FEEL BETTER MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY IS TO CLEAN UP YOUR DIET!!!

Not sure how many of you realize this yet but the majority of todays processed foods is not made or raised for that matter, for the benefit of our health but for corporate profits!! Messed up and hard to believe at times but it is what it is!

To maximize your nutritional intake you should consume daily a wide variety of foods in their whole, natural, preferably organic, unprocessed state. Plenty of posts to come on this matter :)

3. Regular consumption of water:
Water keeps your skin plump and hydrated and nutrients flowing to your newly forming skin, hair and nail cells. Your body literally can't function without water. It lubricates every part part of your body.
You cannot be beautiful, energetic and healthy without  sufficient water intake. It's a fact that a dehydrated person ages prematurely and is exhausted.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

4. Regular elimination of internal and external toxic buildup:
Your skin serves as the interface between your inner and otter self. To keep both detoxified and comfortably functioning, regular removal of bodily wastes must take place via internal elimination (pooping) and the routine removal of such deposits from the top layer of your skin (dry skin brushing).
Pooping - you should be pooping AT LEAST once a day, technically only pooping once a day is considered constipated!! Increase your fiber, take probiotics, digestive enzymes and magnesium, whatever else you gotta do to POOP!
Dry skin brushing - If you haven't already..read my post on Dry Skin Brushing - Bye Bye Cellulite

5. Daily movement:
Regular exercise increases lymphatic flow and circulation, improves digestion, stimulates your metabolic rate and the process of waste removal from the internal organs and skin, and delivers a surge of oxygen to your body, invigorating every organ and allowing your skin to take on radiance.
FACT: Daily exercise is vital to your emotional well-being. It is a natural antidepressant.
If you can try and exercise in the fresh air and sunshine as often as possible and vigorously enough so that you work up a good sweat. Sweating cools your skin and eliminates waste through your pores.

6. Moderate exposure to sunlight:
This does not mean baking in the sun for hours. All living things..plants, animals, and people NEED at least a little sunshine in order to thrive and survive. Moderate sun exposure is good for you in numerous ways. 30-45 minutes daily of unprotected exposure to sunlight early in the morning or in the very late afternoon are best.

7. Sound sleep:
Nighttime is the right time...for renewal and those hours when you sleep are the vital hours your body repairs and rejuvenates.
It's not a coincidence it's also known as BEAUTY SLEEP!!

* All statements were quoted from a collection of books! It's not like I make this shit up..it's FACT! Get with the program!! : )~

The Importance of Soaking and Sprouting

Fun Fact…Did you know that squirrels instinctively know to bury their acorns deep in the moist soil and let sit for at least 1 daysquirrel-nuts.jpgThey know that the raw nuts need the soaking, or germination process, to occur before consuming. This allows the squirrels to obtain the most protein, nutrients and enzymes from the nut and digestion will be much easier. Soaked and sprouted nuts, seeds, legumes and grains are at their most nutritious state, full of live enzymes, and easily digested and absorbed. Enzymes are the key to digestion and digestion is the key to health.

All raw nuts, seeds, grains and legumes naturally have enzyme inhibitors, making them difficult to digest. These enzyme inhibitors simply make it difficult for the food to release the enzymes needed for proper digestion in our body. Through the process of soaking these foods in water, the enzyme  inhibitors are released, and the enzymes increase making it extremely easy for the body to break them down. After a food is soaked approximately 6-12 hours in water, the enzyme inhibitors that prevent it from digesting well are washed away and it is able to release the enzymes, proteins and carbohydrates that are vital to our survival. Another beneficial reason for soaking your grains, nuts, seeds and legumes, is that the food absorbs the water and the higher the water content in a food, the better it is for us. Soaking nuts and seeds also reduces the fat content about 40-50 percent, increasing the protein and mineral content, and are therefore preferred over just raw nuts and seeds. When a food is changed from a dried, dormant state by soaking, it becomes a live, easier to digest plant.

Now that we understand soaking the food, why sprout? Soaking brings the plant to life; sprouting completes the cycle. Sprouting creates an enzymatic transformation; the plant actually goes through a chemical metamorphosis. The plant becomes a concentrated form of nutrients, which becomes the most “alive” source of food available. Sprouting causes the plant to develop its full enzyme capacity that enables the plant to pre-digest itself. Any nut, seed, grain, or legume that you are going to soak and/or sprout should be organic, without preservatives or additives and raw and whole.

To make life easier and save time I buy whatever I can already soaked and sprouted, it might be a little more expensive but in my opinion it's worth it.

I love the company truRoots, I buy their Quinoa, Lentils and Brown Rice. Everything is organic and already soaked and sprouted and can be cooked in under 25 minutes!

Another company I love is Go Raw. They have delicious granola, nuts, bars, crackers, cookies (not your average cookie more like crackers but are sweet) and even dark chocolate! Here is what I happen to have of theirs at the moment

I always keep a small baggy of a mixture of the pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds in my bag for when I'm out and about and get hungry. These seeds have essential fats and substantial amounts of iron and zinc. Raw, unprocessed, unheated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may be two of the most powerful tools in the anti-wrinkle arsenal. Fat preserves your skin's suppleness and youthful sheen. Raw fats also have potent anti-inflammatory properties, promoting heart health and relief of pain.

The bag of pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are about $10 each but they are big and will lost a long time, you don't have to keep in the fridge but if you do they will last longer!

Last but not least.....SPROUTS (a SuperFood)

Here I have a mix of Alfalfa/Clover Sprouts and Sunflower Sprouts. I always add some to my salads!

My 4 favs....

Alfalfa sprouts contain significant dietary sources of phytoestrogens—known to have preventive elements for cancer, heart diseases, menopausal symptoms, and osteoporosis.
Sunflower sprouts are rich in lecithin and vitamin D. Sunflower sprouts have the power to break fatty acids and lead to easy digestion.
Broccoli sprouts are known to have anti-cancer properties. Peppery flavor makes good taste for salad.
Clover sprouts are known as an anti-cancer herb. It have significant source of isoflavones.

Dairy Dairy quite contrary!

OK so if you agreed you would start buying some organic food (for those of you who aren't already) I would say to buy organic dairy, even over fruits and vegetables. Meat would be second on the list.

Non organic milk is loaded with added hormones, chemicals and antibiotics. Not to mention all of the other negatives on dairy alone which I will not get in to. I know most Americans and I'm sure yourself are not willing to give it up so with that being said at least do your body a favor and drink ORGANIC milk. Studies show that organic milk contains higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E and antioxidants.

DO NOT BUY HORIZON ORGANIC MILK!!! Here's why....
*Note: Got this info out of one of my school books, do your own research if you like!
UNFORTUNATELY, even organic dairies can be controversial. Horizon Organic Dairy, the largest US supplier of organic milk, is owned by Dean Foods, the largest processor and distributor of milk in the US. Horizon has been accused of not enforcing the standards necessary to be labeled organic.
On genuine organic dairy farms, cows are raised on open pastures, fed grass and not given any extra hormones. Experts say that the cows at Horizon are raised in pens and fed mostly protein and grains. They have been accused of manipulating and abusing the organic labeling criteria, misrepresenting their product and misleading health conscious consumers into buying it..
Although the milk from the Horizon farms may not be the best quality, it is still better than the milk produced at conventional dairy factories, with thousands of cows pumped up with antibiotics and confined in small spaces.
Organic milk cost up to twice as much as regular milk, but I promise you it is worth it!!!

I personally don't drink milk anymore but my husband does. I was buying Horizon but not anymore...I will be buying Organic Valley from here on out.

I drink almond milk as a dairy milk alternative. Almond Breeze original unsweetened to be exact. I sometimes add a packet of stevia to it to make it a bit sweetener and for a real sweet treat a tablespoon of raw cacao powder, mix in the blender and m m good!
I'm actually having a cup of hot herbal tea right now and as I was writing all this milkness I decided to add a splash of almond milk to my tea and it gave it a whole new taste, yummy...makes it seem a little more filling or something.

Anyhoo...BUY ORGANIC MILK YOU MILK DRINKERS!! But not Horizon! ; )

Food sensitivities and allergies

The more and more research I do the more I am realizing a lot of people have food sensitivities and food allergies they are unaware they even have which can be causing there everyday fatigue, headaches, migraines, sinus issues, ect.... Tests are only of a limited value in detecting food allergies and no real test for food sensitivities. Such sensitivities are usually hidden and are actually caused by the foods we crave...CRAZY I know!
The only real way to identify the foods that cold be bothering you is to do a carefully planned elimination diet. Easier said than done! I've actually read a ton on this and still not 100% confident on this whole elimination diet, there is a lot to it and does not seem easy.
How nice would it be though to finally figure out why you have trouble concentrating or always get those sinus headaches, it could all be from gluten or even dairy, who knows. Figuring it all out is the hard part.

Anyway too much to get into but I wanted to just bring it up. Thought this clip on the Today show this morning was awesome and wanted to share. Just proof diet (eliminating certain foods), nutrition (supplements), ect... can make a world of difference.

I believe.....

I believe everything happens for a reason, and more and more everyday. I honestly would have never thought in a million years that today I would be where I am today and the person I am today. I mean I am the same person inside but I'm talking about other things.

Last night my dad was over and I was showing him my washable produce bags and stopped and started to laugh at myself and thought geese what a dork, I've become this organic green girl and really passionate about all this health stuff.

Being passionate about anything is a huge thing for me. I recall a little over a year ago going to see this life coach lady, my holistic doctor thought it would be a good idea for me to go in hopes of helping resolve the root to my anxiety attacks.

The first thing the lady wanted me to do for her was tell her what I was passionate about....I was kinda stumped, I wasn't sure. I did know then that I was pretty interested in a lot of this health stuff after what I call being 'saved' by my holistic doctor but not necessarily passionate.
I would answer with things like sewing and fashion, my dogs, life in general. She didn't really like any of my answers, she said "ok so you go to bed thinking of those things and wake up thinking about them, they drive you, they motivate you?".
Ok, not really but I had nothing else.... she asked me again and again like I was magically gonna all of a sudden come up with something, this went on for a little over an hour, it was one of the most torturous annoying hours of my life.
To top it off I was told to keep eye contact with her the entire time...UGH..I couldn't wait to leave!!

I actually felt worse when I left, a little depressed. I felt bad about myself like what the heck I'm not passionate about anything?!
After talking to a few friends, they reassured me I wasn't alone and to forget about the weird experience I had just had...who the heck was that lady really anyway?! I don't "need" to be super passionate about one thing in life, I was happy and to me that's all that mattered.

Well now I kinda get it, I truly believe in some crazy way that those panic attacks I had last year were meant to be. They led me me to where I am today that's sure. Passionate about something! I feel like I have a purpose.
Also led me to enroll in school, that alone is cray cray, I gotta be REAL PASSIONATE about something to want go thru school ..LOL! MIght actually make a career out of this! I'm in the middle of doing a business plan for a business I want to start and who knows what else. Either way I'm going along for the ride and enjoying every minute of it.

Heck I even have these stupid pimples that have plagued me forever to thank. Because of them I've been on a mission alone to figure out WHY, why me....and during that mission all the other things about health/diet/life I've learned along the way are truly amazing and I know have all happened for a reason so yes for that I am grateful. Yes even these stupid pimples all over my fuckin face that I hate so much have taught me so much....hahahahaha so crazy I'm saying that .. WTF!

But ya know what....... I'm pretty crazy and it's my crazy life and I LOVE IT!!
What's meant to be will be..EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!

I look back and reflect on my life and WOW I really have had an amazing life. I never knew it at those times but looking back it's pretty fucking amazing. Even those times of heartache and stress and blah blah blah I wouldn't trade them for anything, they've made me who I am today and if you ask me I'M PRETTY FUCKING AWESOME! hahahaha geese my head seems to be getting bigger ; )~

I've done a lot of crazy shit, been a bad bad girl at times but always had fun doing it and have NO REGRETS! I'm glad I did all that I did cause now with where I am today I know that I really didn't miss out on anything cause I've done it all...BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
Nice knowing ya know and on to the next chapter of my life......it's pretty green and organic looking these days I must say HA! Seriously who would have thought?! Not me!

Point of the post ..... I never intended for this blog to have so much health related stuff but considering I will be starting school this week I'm sure it will only get worse ;) I hope if anything I inspire some of you to make some changes in your own life...healthier ones of course! I will be overloading you with lots of information...what I like to call 'tips and tricks' to happier healthier greener life. After all...ONE LOVE....ONE LIFE...LET'S GET TOGETHER AND FEEL ALL RIGHT! "Bob Marley"

PS. By no means I am saying my life is perfect and all happy happy joy joy all the time. But whatever it is, IT IS WHAT IT IS! YOU LIVE AND LEARN, it's LIFE!

No worries...not EVERY post is gonna be about health...so relax! ; )~
